Obstacles to Progress

I have always had the view that the needs of mankind are a set path, and that barring any self-induced catastrophe that wipes us out, it is our destiny to develop new technology until we have reached some kind of "holy grail". Resistance is but one of the many temporary obstacles to developing new technology, but even that occurs less often. As our rate of "progress" (to use a controversial word) goes up, the timeline for acceptance gets shorter, as accepting new ideas becomes more routine.

Our society works in a way that consumer needs dictate the funding and motivation for research and development that leads to progress. Often times, however, people (often individuals) develop ideas that are "ahead of their time". These ideas will be met with the most resistance because the masses will not understand how they will fully integrate with our way of living. The development of these ideas is important, nonetheless, for when their time comes they will be implemented faster, and forethought will become a blessing.

By example of human history, both ancient and modern, an individual who seeks out knowledge beyond the level of his peers often feels alone, disconnected, and someitmes depressed. In many ways, as intelligence, wisdom, and understanding rise, it almost can push us towards a bleaker outlook of society when our ideas are ignored, ridiculed, or otherwise go unnotticed.

Knowing that you can make something, no matter who you are or what you make– that’s probably the only thing that makes you feel like you can make a difference. You can’t change the world, but if you think about it: if you create something, you’ve changed the world. It didn't exist until you made it. People really just need to amend their “You can’t change the world” philosophy and not look at it so idealistic and so absurdly heroic.

I think if you have somebody that you can share your ideas and your dreams with – whether it’s the whole world, or whether it’s just one person; you can feel like you've made something important when someone finds joy in what you do. Finding that person/or persons, who appreciate and enjoy who you are and what you can add to this life, is the true motivation pushing us toward progress. Our progress will stop when we are all too afraid, or too ashamed, of our own dreams.

Just my thoughts.-R

I like 93's thoughts. I also like Gandhi's quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

I'd give some philosophical thoughts of my own but it's too early in the morning and my brain is still asleep.

I'm not sure how I ever aced exams in college at 8am...
